OTEKIEKE STATION
(Established 1860 - Family owned since 1913)
Discover the legacy and natural beauty of Otekaieke Station, nestled in the heart of New Zealand's stunning Waitaki Valley, stretching up into the Danseys Pass. As fifth-generation farmers, we are dedicated to sustainable farming practices, producing premium Merino wool and Angus beef, while preserving our rich history and unique environment.
Our commitment to the land and livestock
At Otekaieke Station, our work is a testament to careful stewardship and a deep respect for our heritage. We invite you to explore our operations, from the land we cherish to the premium products we cultivate.
Merino Sheep Farming
Merino sheep thrive in the challenging high country environment, producing some of the world's finest wool. We are committed to ethical animal husbandry and sustainable grazing practices that ensure the well-being of our flock and the health of our pastures.
Since the late 1990s, we have contracted the majority of our Merino fibre to Icebreaker through Zentera's 10-year rolling contracts.
Angus Beef Cattle
Otekaieke Station is home to a robust herd of Angus cattle, raised for their superior meat quality. Our cattle are pasture-fed and free-ranging, reflecting our dedication to natural and humane farming methods. The breeding cows thrive free ranging in hills all year round where the calves are born, raised and then these progeny finished on farm for market. Each year a number of replacement sire bulls are purchased from leading NZ Angus studs, specifically chosen for their constitution, temperament and breeding values.
Environmental stewardship
We take our responsibility to the environment seriously. Conservation efforts include protecting native flora and fauna, managing water resources, and implementing regenerative farming techniques to ensure the long-term health of our ecosystem and to maintain healthy soils. The farm is certified (NZFAP Plus) Gold standard as well as holding ZQ5 certification.
A rich historical legacy
Otekaieke Station has a captivating history, deeply interwoven with the story of New Zealand's high country. From its pioneering days to its evolution into a modern, sustainable farm, its past informs every step we take today. Our original Cookshop / Shearers Quarters building still stands proud in our front paddock.
Farm Landscape
The farm has a diverse landscape, with some irrgated flats and lowlands used as finishing country for both the beef cattle and merino hoggets.
Rolling hill country and expansive high country in the Danseys Pass run make up the majority of the farm with half of the back country well above 2000ft.
The Oteake Conservation Block backs onto the south western arm of the farm.

Hunting in the High Country
The back run hosts a healthy number of wild Red Deer and a few Himalayan Tahr. Bespoke guided hunting trips are available upon request with basic back country hut accommodation.
